Research Award for Best Platform Presentation in Research in Multiple Sclerosis of the 19th Annual Meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, Orlando, Florida, June 2005

"The results clearly indicate that the device helps patients with MS control their gait. The degree of improvement is proportional to the degree of impairment. The results support the potential role of the device as a rehabilitation modality in MS, and substantiate their specific implementation in efforts to alleviate, improve, and restore mobility in patients with gait disturbances due to neurological disorders in general."

"Before using the Virtual Walker, I was very afraid to walk, it was impossible to keep up with anyone. I couldn't walk without my walker. I couldn't even open the front door of the apartment without losing my balance. Even though I had a million questions, I bought the device because I was willing to take a chance. I would only take my walker to the bathroom, not anywhere else. Now I go downstairs to get the mail and wander around the apartment. I didn't notice the change in my walking, my wife did. Now I practice up to 4 times a day. Thank you for such a beautiful product. "

"Farida used "GaitAid" in Baku, and it helped her undoubtedly. But three months ago Farida felt worse and moved to Moscow where she received a course of medical treatment by "Mitoxantron" preparation. Last week she flew to Moscow again and received the second session and after 3 months she will get the last session with "Mitoxantron". She will also use "GaitAid", but it is mostly an instrument for rehabilitation, not for treatment. However, your device is useful, and Tofik is very thankful to you for your care."
Tofik is father of Farida suffering from MS, Russia"

Improving walking for people living with Multiple Sclerosis

Many people with MS will experience difficulty with walking. Studies suggest that half the people with relapsing-remitting MS will need some assistance with walking within 15 years of their diagnosis.

Gait problems in Multiple Sclerosis are caused by a variety of factors. MS frequently causes fatigue. MS damage to nerve pathways may hamper coordination and/or cause weakness, poor balance, numbness, or spasticity (abnormal increase in muscle tone).

Concern about falling and the emotional impact of appearing impaired in public causes problems too.

For normal walking, the brain relies on:

  • proper sense of timing and rhythm in performing actions
  • a clear sense of direction of the targeted movement
  • internal sensory feedback telling the brain that the body is moving
  • External sensory feedback to movement through vision, hearing and touch
  • Perception of space

By processing this information, the brain performs the needed adjustments of the body.

When Multiple Sclerosis diminishes these mechanisims functions walking becomes difficult and inefficient, leaving patients a little less "in touch" with themselves, where they stand, and where their body parts are located in relation to each other through the walking cycle.

The GaitAid works at improving these issues in several ways, often from the first step.

Using the device at home is very simple.

The effect is often dramatic.

It felt good to be able to walk more effortlessly and freely without feeling so much fatigue.

"I have MS, use a walker and would like to stand up straight and walk as normally as possible, but I use the walker at work, etc because of my balance problems. I walk with the Medigait [GaitAid] on the side of the house with a cane and use the wall for support. Since I started using the Medigait I could walk more, stand up straighter and walk more and not become nearly as tired when I practiced walking without it. I was starting to not lean on the wall so much for support, but the weather is hot now, but I will practice more anyway. It felt good to be able to walk more effortlessly and freely without feeling so much fatigue. I had to make myself stop sometimes after a while, It's an experience that feels good. My best hope now is relying on Tysabri to keep me stable and waiting for stem cell therapy (I hear it is happenning in Isreal), but in the meanwhile it's nice to have something non-invasive to help you walk better."

No training is needed, simply put the device on and start walking. Walking sessions from 5-30 minutes with the GaitAid improve the body's sense of position and movement bringing balance to the steps and enhancing the sense of timing for these movements. The brain relearns to control walking and creates new neural pathways around damaged areas so the improvement lasts even when the device is not in use.

The GaitAid is Now Available for purchase or rental with a 30 day trial period.
