Q: Can I wear my glasses when I'm using this device?

A: The display goggles will fit over small frame glasses. They will not fit over larger frame glasses. Practice with the device requires walking over a predetermined safe path. If you do require eyeglasses for this then the GaitAid device may not be suitable for you.

Q: What are the benefits of practicing with the GaitAid as opposed to practicing on a floor with visual markings?

A: Walking on a floor with markings has been shown to be beneficial for improving walking in movement disorder patients in the clinic. However, the GaitAid Virtual Walker allows the patient to practice in different environments. This is an important aspect of therapy.

The Virtual Walker displays the tiles to step on clearly. The patient can see the surroundings and at the same time focus their attention on the virtual image on the goggle display. The virtual cues are clearly visible, and being closer to the eyes, are much easier to focus on than markings on a floor.

The virtual cues leave a stronger impression and are easier to remember and imagine than real-world visual cues. Many users report they can imagine seeing the virtual tiles in their mind’s eye helping them to continue to improve their walking after their daily session is over.

Q: What do the audio cues sound like?

A: A click or thump similar to a soft bass drum.

Q: What are the benefits of practicing with the GaitAid as opposed to
practicing  with a metronome?

A: The auditory feedback is matched to the patient 's steps. The patient hears auditory sound feedback based on how they walk. This allows them to modify their own gait creating a rhythmic feedback sound. Rhythmic auditory sound cues represent a balanced walking pattern. This feedback system facilitates your rediscovering a natural walking pace.

Q: Is it complicated to use?

A: The GaitAid Virtual Walker is very easy to operate. One knob turns the device on or off and sets the volume of the sound. Using the Audio-Visual Walker comes quite naturally to most people. The image is clear and it easily creates the impression of a real marked floor. There is no training necessary to use the device. "Step onto the tile in front of you", is the only instruction given. If you are working with a therapist, they may add other instructions, as they deem appropriate. However, it isn’t necessary.
